William ‘Buck’ Godfrey, a prominent figure in DeKalb County sports, died on August 1 at the age of 83. Godfrey was the winningest football coach in DeKalb County history, with an impressive record of 273 wins, 13 regional championships, and a state title during his 30 years at Southwest DeKalb High School. His daughter, Rashan Ali, spoke of his lasting legacy, which included mentoring students and fostering community spirit. In recognition of his contributions, Panthersville Stadium was renamed in his honor in 2015. Plans for a public memorial service for Godfrey are in progress.
