Competition for Chargers' left guard intensifies during training camp

The Los Angeles Chargers' training camp is seeing a competitive battle for the starting left guard position with five players vying for the role. As of Saturday, Kayode Awosika, Trevor Penning, Jake Slaughter, Trey Pipkins, and Branson Taylor have all shared reps. Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel noted that the competition will heat up when players don pads on August 4. Currently, the emphasis is on fundamentals, with coaches focused on footwork and positioning rather than physical blocking. Harbaugh expects to have the competition settled in 10 to 13 practices, possibly after the second preseason game.
