Cowboys guard Tyler Smith to miss time following thumb surgery

Dallas Cowboys left guard Tyler Smith will be sidelined for four to six weeks after undergoing thumb surgery. The injury sidelines the three-time Pro Bowl selection for the start of the regular season, including the Week 2 road game against the Washington Commanders. Smith, who signed a four-year extension last year as the highest-paid guard in NFL history at that time, is expected to be replaced in the lineup by T.J. Bass. Bass, an undrafted free agent from 2023, has 10 career starts over 48 games and earned a 67.6 grade from Pro Football Focus during the 2025 season. Outside of the vacancy at left guard, the Cowboys roster remains relatively healthy as the team prepares to open the regular season on the road against the New York Giants.
