Derek Morris leads UMass football to victory against Rutgers

University of Massachusetts kicker Derek Morris converted three field goals and four extra points in a 37-21 victory over Rutgers on September 3. Morris, a Dayton native, connected from 52 yards and forced touchbacks on all eight of his kickoff attempts. The win marked the first time UMass has defeated a power conference opponent since joining the Football Bowl Subdivision in 2012. This performance ended a 16-game losing streak for the program, which finished the 2025 season without a win. Morris earned Mid-American Conference special teams player of the week honors and a Lou Groza Star of the Week award for his efforts.
