Edward Waters University sets financial minimums for division I football scheduling

Edward Waters University President and CEO A. Zachary Faison Jr. announced that the school will no longer schedule games against NCAA Division I opponents unless specific financial requirements are met. The policy follows a recent 66-14 loss to Jackson State University, which yielded the university a net profit of approximately $30,000 after travel expenses. Moving forward, the institution requires a net profit of at least $100,000 from such contests. Additionally, contracts must include a guarantee payout equivalent to 35% of the fee the host school receives for its own Power Four matchups. Faison cited the disparity in scholarship funding as a primary factor, noting that the Tigers offer 29 scholarships compared to the 63 allowed by Division I FCS programs. The university intends to shift its focus toward Division II opponents within the SIAC, CIAA, Conference Carolinas, and the Gulf South Conference.
