Fantasy football data analysis shows low return on middle-round running backs

Fantasy football managers frequently struggle with running backs drafted in the RB20-30 range, commonly known as the dead zone. Data analysis from the previous season indicates that players selected in this tier often fail to justify their draft position despite receiving double-digit touches per game. While 46 running backs averaged at least 10 touches per game last year, 14 of those players failed to reach double-digit fantasy points. Seven of those underperforming players held preseason average draft positions within or near the dead zone. These players often receive sufficient volume in terms of carries or targets but fail to convert those opportunities into substantial fantasy scoring. Managers continue to observe this pattern, noting that players in this specific draft range often provide lower returns relative to their expected usage compared to other positions.
