Across the United States, high school football continues to function as a focal point for local communities, providing stability and connection in changing environments. In Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, the Quips program at the school known as The Pit maintains long-standing traditions, including senior citizen passes that link the community's history to its present. Coach Mike Warfield describes the Friday night gatherings as a unifying force, contrasting with other societal divisions. Data from the National Federation of State High School Associations indicates that prep sports participation is robust, with an estimated 8.4 million student-athletes during the 2025-26 academic year. While youth travel leagues have introduced new competition, traditional high school sports are still viewed by many parents and educators as essential for developing teamwork and resilience. Opportunities in newer areas such as girls' flag football and wrestling are further expanding access for student-athletes at the prep level.

"The phone calls, all asking the same question, started coming long before the lights at “The Pit” flickered on for the first time this fall. “When will the senior citizen passes be available?” Aliquippa High athletic director Jennifer Damico’s office heard more than once as the countdown to the latest season of Quips football inched forward. At the school perched atop a hill about 30 minutes northwest of downtown Pittsburgh, the passes have been a longstanding tradition — a way for the community’s past to connect with its present.
