Longtime Associated Press sports editor Vin Cherwoo dies at age 56

Vin Cherwoo, a veteran editor and writer at The Associated Press for over three decades, died early Friday in Tampa, Florida. He had been hospitalized since May following a long illness. Known to colleagues as "Woo," Cherwoo served as a fixture on the sports desk’s night crew and played a pivotal role in the organization’s multimedia and statistical operations. Beyond his editorial work, he was a dedicated labor advocate who served as president of the News Media Guild, Local 31222, since 2020. Throughout his tenure, he helped negotiate multiple contracts and contributed to the coverage of major professional sports teams including the New York Yankees, Mets, Rangers, Islanders, and New Jersey Devils. He is survived by his wife, Stacy, and his parents, Bal and Peggy Cherwoo.
