Manchester United considers adding centre-back amid injury concerns

Summary

Former Manchester United defender Danny Simpson has expressed that the team needs to sign a new centre-back. Injuries to Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt, combined with Harry Maguire's advancing age, have raised concerns about the defensive line's depth. Martinez's status for the start of the upcoming domestic campaign remains uncertain after an injury during the World Cup final. De Ligt is undergoing rehabilitation and is expected to return for the early stages of the 2026-27 season. United has added a back-up goalkeeper, two midfielders, and a young forward this summer but has yet to address the centre-back position.

What they're saying

"
"Lisandro Martinez is injured, Matthijs de Ligt gets injured a lot and Harry Maguire is 33 now, so I think we could do with a centre-back," Simpson told BBC Radio Manchester. United currently have a wealth of experience in the centre-back department with Martinez, De Ligt and Maguire, but injuries halted their playing time together last season.
