Melvin Council Jr. sues NCAA to gain final year of eligibility

Former Kansas basketball guard Melvin Council Jr. has filed a lawsuit against the NCAA in Monroe County, New York, seeking an additional year of eligibility. Council contends that his time playing in junior college should not be counted against his four-year NCAA limit. The complaint alleges that the NCAA’s enforcement of eligibility rules caused him irreparable harm and prevented him from pursuing NIL contracts for the 2026-2027 season. Council previously spent time at Wagner, St. Bonaventure, and Kansas, where he was named the 2025-2026 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. His legal counsel argues he has only completed three years of NCAA competition and is entitled to a fourth. The litigation follows an unsuccessful attempt earlier this year to secure an eligibility waiver through the Kansas athletics compliance office.
