Michigan beats Western Michigan 13-12 on a final-play touchdown pass

The Kyle Whittingham era at Michigan opened with a 13-12 victory over Western Michigan at Michigan Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 5. Quarterback Bryce Underwood threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to JJ Buchanan as time expired to secure the result for the Wolverines. Michigan trailed 12-7 after Western Michigan kicker Dieter Kelly converted a 33-yard field goal with 35 seconds remaining. The drive began at the Michigan 25-yard line and required an extra second added to the clock following an incomplete pass. Underwood finished the game 12-of-22 for 170 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and one fumble. Despite the win, Michigan captain Jordan Marshall noted the team needs to improve its performance moving forward.
