Newcastle United entered a transition period this summer following the departure of manager Eddie Howe. Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock suggested that the club pushed Howe into a decision by failing to provide sufficient financial support for team strengthening. Alongside the change in leadership, the club saw significant departures as Anthony Gordon moved to Barcelona, Sandro Tonali joined Tottenham, and Bruno Guimaraes transferred to Arsenal. While Warnock argued that the club chose to offload these players for financial gain, others in the media maintain that these sales were not the preferred outcome for the organization. Journalist Rory Smith noted that while the club’s recent management of the situation appears impressive, the moves were reactive rather than part of a deliberate long-term strategy to overhaul the squad. Newcastle now faces the challenge of adjusting to this new roster and coaching structure.

- •Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and Bruno Guimaraes transferred to Barcelona, Tottenham, and Arsenal respectively.

- 9:53 AMYahoo Sports — Did Newcastle 'choose' to enter a transitional period?
"Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock believes Eddie Howe's departure from Newcastle United this summer acted as a catalyst for a transitional period at St James' Park. Since the end of the 2025-26 season, the Magpies have also lost the services of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, Sandro Tonali to Tottenham and Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal. "Newcastle were the ones who chose to get rid of their manager this summer, in my opinion," Warnock said on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club.
