Niall Sheils Donegan and partner Josh Hill secured a 4 and 3 victory for Great Britain and Ireland against Americans Ryder Cowan and Josiah Gilbert during the opening foursomes session of the 51st Walker Cup at Lahinch, Ireland. The win followed an early procedural error when Donegan picked up a ball on the ninth hole before his opponents formally conceded the putt. Match officials assessed a penalty for the infraction, resulting in the loss of the hole for the home pair. Despite the lapse, the duo maintained their lead and eventually closed out the match on the 15th green. Great Britain and Ireland concluded the opening session with a 2.5-1.5 lead in the event. Donegan is scheduled to participate in a singles match against Tyler Watts later Saturday.
