Notre Dame football honors late coach Lou Holtz with helmet decal

Notre Dame football announced Wednesday that the team will honor the memory of former head coach Lou Holtz with a decal on its helmets for the remainder of the 2026 season. The tribute features a round sticker with the name "LOU" in white letters against a black background, flanked by an outline of two hands forming the "L" symbol. The decal will be placed on the back lower right portion of the program's signature golden helmets. Holtz served as head coach of the Irish from 1986 to 1996 and led the team to an undefeated national championship in 1988. He died on March 4 at age 89 and is buried on the Notre Dame campus. The school is currently ranked fifth in the US LBM Coaches Poll as it pursues its first national title in nearly four decades.
