OU cancels classes ahead of football season opener against UT-El Paso

Norman Public Schools and the University of Oklahoma have canceled in-person classes on Friday, Sept. 4, in anticipation of disruptions due to traffic and safety concerns related to the Sooners' football season opener against UT-El Paso. The cancellation allows both NPS and OU students to enjoy a four-day weekend as Labor Day follows on Monday. The decision mirrors a similar step taken in 2024 when the Sooners also played their opener on a Friday. Only essential workers at OU are required to report on that day, while most staff will not work remotely and will receive administrative leave.
