Phillies trade for outfielder Colby Thomas from Athletics before deadline

Summary

The Philadelphia Phillies executed a trade with the Oakland Athletics, acquiring outfielder Colby Thomas in exchange for right-handed pitcher Seth Johnson just before the trade deadline. Despite his struggles in the majors with a.214 batting average, the 25-year-old Thomas, formerly a top prospect, showcased a strong Triple-A performance last season, hitting.309 with a.971 OPS. The Phillies, who have been seeking to address their outfield depth, did not manage to secure an additional pitcher before the deadline. Thomas is expected to report to Triple-A and may eventually provide a right-handed bat for the major league roster.
