Pro Football Hall of Fame updates induction selection rules for future classes

The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced significant structural changes to its selection process on September 4, 2026. The selection committee size is reduced from 50 to 28 voting members. The separate Seniors category for players retired for more than 25 years has been eliminated, placing all eligible players into one pool following a mandatory five-year retirement period. Additionally, the annual finalist pool will shift to 13 players, one coach, and one contributor, with finalists no longer carrying over to the next year if they do not reach the final seven. These changes potentially complicate the path to induction for long-time candidates like Jim Marshall, who previously sought enshrinement through the Seniors category. The revised contributor eligibility criteria will now encompass a candidate’s entire football résumé, including playing and coaching experience.
