Raiders confirm Fernando Mendoza's backup role before preseason opener

Summary

The Las Vegas Raiders announced that Fernando Mendoza will be the backup quarterback behind Kirk Cousins for their preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals. This decision follows Mendoza's practice-field promotion, elevating him above Aidan O'Connell. Head coach Klint Kubiak stated that Cousins is the clear starter, with Mendoza learning the offense and taking second-team reps. The Raiders plan to develop Mendoza under Cousins rather than rush him into a starting role. Future game appearances for Mendoza may depend on Cousins' performance and the team's standings as the season progresses.
