Baumgartner, a Washington State graduate, attributed the conference's subsequent collapse and the resulting economic disadvantage for his alma mater to the expansion of transcontinental athletic schedules. UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk stated the school’s financial situation was the primary factor in the personnel change. Former Lakers executive Tim Harris will serve as the interim athletic director on a pro bono basis.
