Kenny Omega and Will Ospreay had one of the best main event matches you’ll ever see at AEW’s All In pay-per-view from Wembley Stadium last weekend. One prominent wrestling journalist who you might know, named Dave Meltzer from the Wrestling Observer, compared the emotion of their match very favorably to any individual match in the legendary feud between Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat. Meltzer was saying this in response to music star Darius Rucker, because pro wrestling is fantastic at bringing people from all industries together. I saw countless Flair-Steamboat matches. WOOOOO!” I think Flair is trying to argue against a point that nobody was making in good faith if he thinks one incredible match between Ospreay and Omega somehow undermines or threatens the greatness of his entire feud with Steamboat, to the point where he is putting the AEW stars down like this. I’m also gonna need Scott Steiner to see if the math checks out about the Flair vs. Steamboat classic happening 300 times in a year. It’s also amusing that Ric refers to Omega as a “Great Young Talent” and one of the “Kids,” even though Kenny is approaching 43 years old and much closer to the end of his career than the beginning. But nobody respects Kenny and Will more than the Nature Boy, I guess? To be fair to Flair, his criticism of Ospreay vs. Omega doesn’t come anywhere close to as dumb as Eric Bishoff, who on his podcast said it was “like watching a Nasty Boys match.” It can be a little funny, a little sad, and quite eye-opening when people who used to be at the top of the wrestling business throw out some of the worst takes possible.
