Running back Ian Wheeler declines Buffalo Bills practice squad offer

Following his release during final roster cuts on Sunday, rookie running back Ian Wheeler has declined an offer to join the Buffalo Bills practice squad. Wheeler, an undrafted free agent from Howard, appeared in preseason contests and drew praise for his performance throughout the summer. Despite his production, the Bills opted to fill their active roster with James Cook, Ray Davis, and Ty Johnson, leaving no room for Wheeler. Some analysts suggested that keeping the younger, lower-cost rookie over the veteran Johnson could have served as a more effective long-term roster strategy. With his decision to turn down the practice squad spot, Wheeler is now free to pursue opportunities with other NFL teams. The Bills meanwhile retained Frank Gore Jr. on their practice squad as their fourth option at the position.
