Sonny Amato commits to Rutgers wrestling after decommitting from Iowa

Sonny Amato, a two-time state wrestling champion from Rumson-Fair Haven, announced his commitment to Rutgers University on Sunday. The announcement follows a visit to the campus on Saturday and comes after Amato decommitted from Iowa in August. A standout at the NJSIAA level, Amato holds a career record of 122-6 and captured state titles at 144 pounds in 2024 and 150 pounds last season. He is currently ranked No. 3 nationally in his weight class by flowrestling. Amato joins a growing list of notable recruits for the Scarlet Knights, including several other state champions and medal winners. The addition continues a trend of top New Jersey talent choosing the Rutgers program, following the earlier commitment of former St. John Vianney wrestler Anthony Knox.
