South African aviation authority reviews low passenger jet flypast at stadium

The South African Civil Aviation Authority is reviewing a low-altitude flypast performed by two passenger jets before the rugby union Test between South Africa and New Zealand in Cape Town. The aircraft passed within 100 metres of the DHL Stadium roof during the event on August 29. While spectators cheered the maneuver, the proximity of the jets sparked significant safety concerns and led the regulator to initiate a formal assessment. Airline operator Airlink confirmed the flight was planned and crewed by senior captains, though it has since withdrawn plans for a future flyover in Soweto. The aviation authority is currently analyzing flight data recordings to determine if the display violated safety standards. A final report including formal recommendations will be released once the investigation concludes.
