Sovereignty withdraws from Jockey Club Gold Cup due to foot abscess

Sovereignty will not compete in next Friday’s Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park after being ruled out by trainer Bill Mott. The 4-year-old colt developed an abscess in his left hind foot, forcing him to miss two scheduled workouts. This withdrawal prevents a highly anticipated matchup against Breeders' Cup Classic winner Forever Young. Sovereignty previously recovered from a fever that led to a scratch from the Breeders' Cup Classic last year. Trainer Bill Mott intends to resume the horse's training by the middle of next week with an aim toward the Breeders' Cup Classic on October 31. The New York Racing Association also confirmed that Money Game will not participate in the $1 million race following a setback during his final breeze.
