Cactus Jack “nose” how to control the Stinger. | (Photo: WWE) This past weekend marked the 34th anniversary of one of the wildest matches in WCW history. On June 20, 1992, WCW World Champion Sting met Mick Foley, wrestling then as Cactus Jack, at the first-ever Beach Blast in a Falls Count Anywhere Match. Their feud began the previous fall when Foley attacked the Stinger, starting an on-and-off rivalry. Though this non-title match served mostly as a bridge to Sting’s next program against Big Van Vader, they didn’t hold back. They made great use of the ramp that led from the entryway to the ring, with Sting slingshotting “Mr. Bang Bang” into the ropes and catching him with a back body drop. 34 years ago today, Sting defeated Cactus Jack in a Falls Count Anywhere match. 🦂 WHAT A FIGHT! 📍 WCW Beach Blast 1992 pic.twitter.com/EefzSBdr2R — 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐕𝐞𝐧 (@WrestlingCovers) June 20, 2026 The first five minutes took place entirely outside the ring, highlighted by Foley coming off the apron to the floor with a sunset flip for a two-count. It wasn’t until they got in the ring that the action slowed down. After making the equivalent of a pit stop, the hardcore race to the finish resumed on the floor, where Sting dropped Foley on his head with a vicious belly-to-back suplex. Foley tried to return the favor with a piledriver, but his knee gave out, a slight reprieve for the champion. Sting mounted a comeback, punishing Cactus with a steel chair. With perhaps a final surge of energy, Sting ended things where they began: on the ramp. In his 1999 autobiography, Have a Nice Day: A Tale of Blood and Sweatsocks, Foley revealed that he had trained hard for the bout and, for a time, considered it to be the best match of his career. By modern standards, some may consider this tame. There are no table spots, nor does Foley attempt any death-defying bumps, though he did leap from the second rope to the concrete floor with an attempted elbow drop. Yet, the intensity from the two wrestlers and the excitement from the fans inside the Mobile Civic Center in Mobile, Alabama, never wavered. This is peak “surfer” Sting and an appetizer for the craziness to come from Foley.
