Sunderland opts for Thomas Meunier over Lutsharel Geertruida

Summary

Sunderland has chosen to sign Thomas Meunier on a free transfer, opting not to make Lutsharel Geertruida's loan deal permanent. Geertruida, a fan favorite, made 28 appearances last season but played a limited role. The decision is based on financial strategy, as Meunier is expected to provide a more economical option while allowing the club to maintain flexibility in their squad as they prepare for a European campaign. By prioritizing a more strategic signing, Sunderland aims to navigate UEFA's stricter financial regulations effectively.
