Tennessee historical data highlights 1941 football debut against Furman

Ahead of the 2026 season opener between Tennessee and Furman at Neyland Stadium, historical records document the first meeting between these programs on September 20, 1941. In that contest at Shields-Watkins Field, Tennessee defeated Furman 32-6 in the head coaching debut for John Barnhill. Barnhill assumed the leadership of the program after Robert Neyland entered military service. During that 1941 matchup, Johnny Butler recorded two touchdown passes, while Bobby Ciphers contributed a 35-yard touchdown pass and a rushing score.
