Tigers pitcher Jack Flaherty nears return with Triple-A rehab start

Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch announced that relief pitcher Jack Flaherty is slated to begin a rehabilitation assignment with the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens this weekend. Flaherty has been sidelined since July 21 due to a right flexor strain. The pitcher recently completed a live bullpen session where he reached 93 mph with his fastball. While Hinch noted that returning Flaherty to a full starter's workload will be difficult given the late stage of the season, the team intends to incorporate him back into the pitching rotation creatively. The Tigers are currently 64-75 and are scheduled to begin a series against the Cleveland Guardians on Friday afternoon. Flaherty expressed a strong desire to return to the mound to assist his teammates for the remainder of the season.
