Two-time Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Galopin Des Champs dies at age 10

Galopin Des Champs, the winner of the 2023 and 2024 Cheltenham Gold Cup, died Tuesday following an accident in a field. The 10-year-old gelding was retired by his connections less than a week before the incident occurred. Trainer Willie Mullins’ team discovered the horse with a severe injury to his near front leg during a morning exercise session. Veterinary assessment at the scene confirmed the damage was extensive and irreparable. Ruby Walsh confirmed the death, noting that the horse could not be saved despite immediate medical attention. In addition to his two Cheltenham Gold Cup victories, the horse secured three Irish Gold Cup wins at Leopardstown during his career.
