Vanderbilt defeats Austin Peay in season opening football game

Vanderbilt defeated Austin Peay 28-9 on September 5 at FirstBank Stadium in a season-opening matchup. The game was called with 2:16 remaining in the fourth quarter following a weather delay caused by nearby lightning. Vanderbilt quarterback Blaze Berlowitz led the offense for much of the contest, while freshman Jared Curtis made his debut in the second half. Austin Peay took an early lead on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Chris Parson to Denver Harper, but Vanderbilt responded with a stronger ground attack and a pair of special teams scores. A blocked extra point returned for two points and a 27-yard touchdown return by linebacker Josiah Broxton helped secure the victory for the Commodores. The Vanderbilt defense held Austin Peay to 178 total yards and recorded five sacks against Parson during the evening.
