Wyndham Clark takes four-shot lead as U.S. Open round suspended

Wyndham Clark finished his darkness-halted first round of the 126th US Open with two pars on Friday morning, completing a six-under par 64 to hold a two-stroke lead at windy Shinnecock.Clark owned a four-stroke overnight lead through 16 holes but compatriot Dustin Johnson, a two-time major winner, birdied the par-three seventh and par-four ninth to trim his playing partner's edge in half.

Wyndham Clark, who will finish the final two holes of his first round on Friday, has a four-shot cushion in the U.S. Open as play was suspended due to darkness.

Former champion Wyndham Clark was grateful for an early two-hour fog delay as it allowed him to take advantage of relatively benign conditions late in the day to soar to the top of the US Open first-round leaderboard on six under. Fearing wind gusts of up 35mph, organizers set up the Shinnecock Hills course to ensure the fearsomely-fast greens could hold the balls on the putting surfaces – but when it did not blow as hard as expected, it made for easier scoring.

Wyndham Clark did his part. The U.S. Open weather didn’t. Now everyone's looking up at him.
