Bourton Rovers Football Club hosts annual river match in Bourton-on-the-Water

Hundreds of spectators gathered on the banks of the River Windrush for the annual bank holiday football match hosted by Bourton Rovers Football Club. The traditional contest takes place in ankle-deep water in the Gloucestershire village of Bourton-on-the-Water. Players from both sides competed throughout the match, which resulted in a 3-3 draw. While the participants attempted to splash water onto the crowd, attendees remained on the riverbank protected by umbrellas and waterproof jackets. The tradition dates back over 100 years, reportedly starting after patrons at a riverside pub staged an impromptu game in the shallow water. No winner was determined as the match concluded without a definitive result.
