Former Tulsa safety McKinley Whitfield recovers at home after medical emergency

Former Tulsa football safety and current Bartlesville assistant coach McKinley Whitfield is recovering at home following a medical emergency that occurred Saturday, Aug. 29. Whitfield was initially hospitalized, intubated, and sedated before being transferred to a Tulsa medical facility for further care. His partner, Cenia, reported on Sunday that he remained on a ventilator but began breathing more independently. By Monday night, Whitfield was discharged from the hospital. A GoFundMe fundraiser has been established to assist with expenses, collecting more than $6,800 of its $8,000 target. Whitfield previously played four seasons at Tulsa before transitioning into a coaching career that has included positions at Broken Arrow, Porter, Tulsa Edison, and Tahlequah.
