Patrick Tompkins, a standout forward for the Wisconsin men’s basketball team from 1987 to 1991, has died at age 66. The Waukegan, Illinois, native passed away on September 3, according to the University of Wisconsin and his obituary from the Bradshaw & Range Funeral Home. During his collegiate career, Tompkins earned first-team All-Big Ten honors and was named the team’s most valuable player as a senior in 1991. He currently holds the Wisconsin program record for career field goal percentage at 57.3% among players with at least 500 attempts. One of his most notable performances occurred on January 20, 1990, when he scored a buzzer-beating lay-in to defeat No. 21 Minnesota at the UW Field House. Tompkins also contributed to the first two NIT appearances in the history of the Wisconsin men’s basketball program.
