Michigan State defeats Toledo 30-20 in season opener at Spartan Stadium

Michigan State began the season with a 30-20 victory over Toledo on Friday at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing. The win marked the coaching debut of Pat Fitzgerald, who oversaw a Spartan offense that relied heavily on kicker Liam Boyd. Boyd converted five field goals in the contest, including a 51-yard kick in the final minutes to help secure the result. Toledo briefly took a 20-19 lead in the fourth quarter following a 71-yard touchdown run by Connor Walendzak, but Michigan State responded with a touchdown pass from Alessio Milivojevic to Rodney Bullard Jr. The Spartans faced several injuries during the game, including starters Jordan Hall and Ben Murawski.
