Roddy Gayle Jr. sues NCAA to secure eligibility for Michigan basketball

Former Michigan guard Roddy Gayle Jr. filed a lawsuit against the NCAA and president Charlie Baker in Niagara County Supreme Court on Monday. The filing seeks a court order permitting Gayle to compete during the 2026-27 basketball season. Michigan has reportedly offered to roster Gayle for the upcoming year, pending his eligibility status, and he has been participating in team practices. The dispute stems from the NCAA’s transition to a new age-based eligibility model, which failed to automatically grant an additional season to players from the 2022 high school class. Although a Colorado judge initially provided temporary relief in July, the Tenth Circuit stayed that injunction in August, leaving many athletes in an ineligible position. Gayle argues in his filing that the current application of NCAA rules constitutes a breach of contract and is unenforceable.
