Akron allowed a season-ticket holder to call plays for one opening drive

Akron gave season-ticket holder and alum Marty Whims II the opportunity to serve as offensive coordinator for the opening drive of its home opener against Robert Morris. Whims utilized a no-huddle strategy to move the ball down to the Colonials' 37-yard line. The possession ended abruptly when Akron fumbled, concluding the fan's temporary role as play-caller. Whims noted after the game that he believed the team would have scored a touchdown if not for the turnover. Akron eventually secured a 45-10 victory over the FCS opponent after pulling away in the second half. The promotion was restricted to season-ticket and suite holders.
