Hinchliffe Stadium hosts tribute for Dominican baseball pioneer Rabbit Martinez

Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson will host a series of events on Sunday, Sept. 6, to honor Horacio “Rabbit” Martinez, a shortstop who played for the New York Cubans in the 1940s. Martinez later served as a scout for organizations including the San Francisco Giants after a career that featured multiple selections to the Negro League All-Star Game. The scheduled programming includes a morning softball game between the Fort Lee Falcons and Las Estrellas de Las Hortensias. At 2 p.m., the New Jersey Jackals will play their final regular season home game of 2026. Organizers have also arranged a tour and reception at the Charles J. Muth Museum located within the stadium throughout the day. This event recognizes the history of the Negro Leagues while connecting Martinez’s legacy to the local baseball community in Paterson.
