Ohio State coach Ryan Day keeps backup quarterback role open for competition

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day has not yet named a backup quarterback for the season opener against Ball State on September 5. Players Tavien St. Clair and Luke Fahey are continuing to split repetitions with the second-team offense during practice this week. While St. Clair entered the program in 2025 as a highly regarded recruit, Fahey has challenged for the position throughout the preseason training camp. Day stated that he may attempt to play both quarterbacks during the game depending on the situation, as the depth chart behind starter Julian Sayin remains fluid. Historically, Day has fluctuated between publicly naming a primary backup and maintaining an open depth chart entering the season.
