UCLA defensive unit adopts Bruin Bullies identity before season opener

UCLA debuts its revamped defensive unit on the road against Cal this Saturday night. Defensive coordinator Colin Hitschler leads the group, which has adopted the internal moniker Bruin Bullies as a reflection of their physical playing style. The squad enters the 2026 season looking to improve on last year’s defensive performance, which allowed an average of 33.4 points per game. New additions to the roster include defensive end Sahir West and linebacker Trent Hendrick, both of whom transferred from the Sun Belt Conference. West, the 2025 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, and Hendrick, the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year, are expected to anchor the defensive front. The unit faces its first challenge against quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele and the Golden Bears in the season opener.
